First: CO2 neutral, tree-free copy and print paper from plant residues
PaperWise introduces unbleached CO2 neutral copy and print paper made from plant residues; stems and leaves left over from agriculture. This makes PaperWise copy paper 100% tree-free. The advantage of our paper innovation is the extremely low environmental impact and maximum contribution to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Curious how PaperWise print paper contributes to this?
Why print paper from agricultural plant residues?
“It’s just copy paper,” you might think. And that is true. Precisely because it is such a common, widely used product, one often doesn’t consider the impact that can be achieved by choosing an eco-friendly alternative. Print paper is primarily used to read information quickly and comfortably, and to make notes if desired. Everyone uses it, at home and/or at work, and that is exactly why copy and print paper has such a significant environmental impact. Most copy paper is made from trees with growth periods between 15 and 80 years. Many years are therefore required for trees to grow before they are harvested, while the lifespan of print paper is relatively extremely short. At PaperWise, we demonstrate that there is another way. PaperWise Natural Copy & Printing A4 72-gram paper, made entirely from agricultural plant residues, offers the solution for individuals and companies looking for the most eco-friendly and sustainable copy and print paper.
The environmental impact of copy and print paper
In Europe, we use 75 million tonnes of paper and paperboard annually. 55% of this is recycled, and the remaining 45% is made from trees (Source: CEPI). It may be shocking, but we fell 265 million trees annually for this purpose! The forestry area required for this is larger than the United Kingdom or six times the size of the Netherlands. Global consumption of paper and paperboard is four times higher (Source: CEPI). Add to this the fact that the world population is still growing, and with it paper consumption, and it becomes clear to everyone that land use for forestry in the paper sector poses a major threat and is not future-proof.
Circular print and copy paper
Why are plant residues (stems and leaves) left over after the harvest of agricultural crops burned instead of being reused as raw material for copy and print paper? What can we improve regarding existing copy and print paper? These are the questions we asked ourselves. Since our launch in 2015, PaperWise has been fully focused on the circular economy. We want to maximize our contribution to as many SDGs as possible. This led to the idea of developing a new generation of copy paper with the lowest environmental impact while creating a foundation for increased prosperity in developing countries. Contributing to the SDGs with PaperWise copy and print paper. PaperWise has consciously chosen to use agricultural plant residues for all types of paper. This allows us to contribute to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations:
MULTIPLE VALUE FROM WASTE
Agricultural plant residues create extra income for poor farmers. This increases their prosperity, improves food security, and makes medical care and education affordable. Financial inequality decreases, laying a foundation for safe and sustainable communities.
EQUALITY, RESPECT, AND PARTNERSHIPS FOR A SUSTAINABLE SOCIETY
The foundation for fair business practices and a peaceful, just society begins with awareness. Respect and equality between men, women, companies, and organizations. Connecting with one another. Working together as partners to build sustainable industrialization and infrastructure for everyone.
WISE WITH WASTE
Cellulose, the raw material for paper and paperboard, can be extracted from agricultural waste using less energy, chemicals, and water. From the same piece of land and plant comes both food and the raw material for paper. Safety, green energy, and processes in which waste is used as raw material keep ecological systems in balance.
PaperWise Natural copy paper delivers added value
By choosing PaperWise, you contribute to extra income for farmers in developing countries, and you also contribute to clean air because agricultural waste no longer needs to be burned on the land. Unbleached PaperWise Natural paper has a light brown color, giving it a sustainable appearance. Texts are very pleasant and easy to read. PaperWise Natural 72-gram copy paper feels just as sturdy as bleached 80-gram white paper from trees, yet it is 10% lighter—another advantage of not bleaching paper. The packaging of PaperWise Natural copy paper is made from the same material, ensuring sustainability is implemented throughout. Another first is the very convenient cut-out handles in the box, making lifting and carrying much easier.
