And what is the difference between grass paper and the environmentally friendly, sustainable PaperWise paper? To answer these questions, we must look at the differences in raw materials in paper and paperboard. Two important raw materials in paper and paperboard are cellulose and fillers. Traditional paper contains cellulose from trees, which makes the paper strong and sturdy, and fillers such as lime (calcium carbonate), which makes the paper smooth and even so that it can be easily printed and written on. PaperWise is also a paper based on cellulose and fillers; however, the cellulose originates from agricultural waste. But what is the function of grass in paper and paperboard?      <\/p>\n<p>Grass paper and grass paperboard are types of paper and paperboard where a portion of grass fibers has been added to the cellulose and fillers. We know grass as a food source for grazing animals worldwide and, in dried form, as hay for livestock such as cows, sheep, goats, horses, etc. We also encounter grass in verges along roads and waterways. To avoid having to compost, ferment, or incinerate surplus grass, the industry began experimenting with adding grass to paper and paperboard. For grass paper and grass paperboard, the grass is cleaned, dried, and shredded after mowing. The advantage of these simple processes is the low environmental impact. Unfortunately, grass is neither cellulose nor a filler, meaning it does not contribute to the strength or smoothness of paper and paperboard. So why does the paper industry produce grass paper and grass paperboard?       <\/p>\n<p>Grass paper and grass paperboard have their origins in sustainability. Raw materials, waste products, and closing cycles are becoming increasingly important. Would it not be beneficial to add grass surpluses to paper and paperboard to create more value? This is how the idea of grass paper and grass paperboard originated. The proportion of grass in grass paper and grass paperboard varies from an average of 5% to 10% in printing paper for books, magazines, and stationery, and 10% to 30% in folding board for fruit, vegetable, and product packaging. Technically, a grass content of up to 50% is possible, but it is not yet applied in practice due to quality challenges. There is still room for innovation here. Grass takes the place of cellulose and fillers and primarily fulfills a visual role in the paper and paperboard. You can see the grass fibers, which helps tell your story.        <\/p>\n<p>Like conventional paper, PaperWise is made based on cellulose and fillers, making it strong, sturdy, and smooth. However, the cellulose in PaperWise does not come from trees, but from agricultural waste! After harvesting agricultural crops (such as rice, wheat, barley, hemp, sugar cane, etc.), farmers in developing countries are left with 80% of the plant in the form of stems and leaves (agricultural waste). Billions of tons of agricultural waste become available worldwide every year. A portion of this agricultural waste is plowed back into the soil, but the vast majority has no value and is burned in the open air. We therefore use residual materials from another industry that would otherwise be burned, but in the case of PaperWise, are given a second life. PaperWise is an ecologically and socially logical and future-proof choice. The environmental impact of PaperWise is 47% lower than the environmental impact of paper from trees and 29% lower than that of recycled paper.
