We collect and separate waste, and we increasingly choose environmentally friendly materials. One of the most recognizable materials is paper. Because as much as we might consider plastic to be ‘wrong’, we consider paper to be ‘good’. In fact, in the sustainability movement we have collectively initiated, paper is often the designated sustainable alternative to plastic. You could therefore conclude that paper is more or less spared in the sustainability revolution. But is that justified? How sustainable is paper actually? And what types of sustainable paper exist?

THE CO2 FOOTPRINT OF PAPER

In the book ‘Drawdown: The Most Comprehensive Plan Ever Proposed to Reverse Global Warming’ by Paul Hawken, it can be read that the paper industry emits a shocking amount of CO2. The paper industry is responsible for global CO2 emissions amounting to approximately 7 percent of the annual total global CO2 emissions. For comparison: aviation is responsible for 2.5 percent. In other words, the paper industry is nearly 3 times more polluting than the aviation industry (source). And it does not appear that we are going to use less paper. In fact, over the past 40 years, paper consumption worldwide has increased by 400% (source).

But why is it that paper, which we all consider a reasonably environmentally conscious choice compared to plastic, for example, can be so environmentally damaging? It works like this: In Europe, we use about 80 kilos of paper per person per year for reading, packaging, and of course in the toilet as toilet paper. Trees must be felled for approximately half of all paper. The other half is recycled paper. An average tree yields 300 kilos of paper (source). For paper use, an average of one tree is therefore felled per 8 inhabitants per year. With approximately 447 million inhabitants, that amounts to nearly 56 million trees per year, for Europe alone. The trees that are felled normally absorb an average of 25 kilograms of CO2 (source). And if 56 million trees can no longer absorb and hold 25 kilograms of CO2 per year… You understand: that has a massive impact on the environment.

After the tree is felled, the long cycle of the production process begins, from tree to pulp and from pulp to paper. Within that entire production process, a lot of energy consumption and transport take place, which all lead to CO2 emissions. The paper is then printed with ink, sometimes wrapped in plastic again, and far too often ends up in places where it cannot be recycled.

IS PAPER COMPOSTABLE?

And if paper ends up in places where it cannot be recycled, for example in nature? Does nature solve the problem of paper as waste? Yes and no. In general, paper is both biodegradable and compostable. There is a time limit on compostability; it must be at least 95% degraded within 2 weeks in an industrial composting plant to meet the European standard for industrial composting EN 13432 (source). However, much paper is provided with industrial additives, such as chemicals, coatings, and ink, which make it harder to degrade, meaning composting within 2 weeks is not always the case. More importantly: it is even better for the environment not to throw paper away, but to recycle it again. By recycling paper instead of throwing it away, we reduce the demand for new wood fibers from trees for paper production. This in turn helps to reduce deforestation. For paper that is not recycled, composting is of course an environmentally friendly waste route.

WHICH OTHER TYPES OF PAPER (NOT FROM TREES) EXIST?

Traditional paper may be less sustainable than you initially thought, but fortunately there are alternatives:

Grass paper

Grass is all around us. In the verges along the highways, in the meadows where livestock graze, and in dried form as hay for stable animals. For some time now, grass paper has also been available. As the name suggests, this paper is partially made from grass. The ground grass fibers are added to the cellulose pulp and fillers required to make paper. This makes the paper slightly more sustainable, as this addition ensures that fewer trees are needed for production. Furthermore, the grass fibers are clearly visible, which is an attractive visible element in this grass paper.

Significant disadvantages of grass paper and grass paperboard are the quality, the loss, and the pollution during production. After all, grass is not cellulose or filler and therefore does not contribute to the strength and smoothness of the paper and paperboard. The higher the proportion of grass, the lower the quality of the paper. Consequently, in practice, grass paper often consists of only 5% to 10% grass. In grass paperboard, the proportion of grass is slightly higher because the material is thicker. Another disadvantage is that 50% of the grass is lost during paper production and does not end up in the paper. The grass lost during paper production pollutes the wastewater because it is organic material. As soon as grass paper or grass paperboard is recycled, a further loss of 50% of grass occurs, which is lost during production. The energy for processing is then useless. The grass that is lost also causes additional pollution of the wastewater here.

Tomato paper, beet paper, cocoa paper

Increasingly, alternative fibers are being used to make paper. The idea is that as long as we save the tree, it is a good thing. Over the past 10 years, many types of paper made from alternative fibers have been introduced. For tomato paper, beet paper, and cocoa paper, the same applies as for grass paper. The fibers used are not cellulose, offer no quality, and are mixed in small proportions with wood pulp from trees. The names tomato paper, beet paper, and cocoa paper sound wonderful, just like grass paper, and the paper types look beautiful with these alternative fibers. That is the main reason for the popularity of these new paper types. A significant disadvantage of bamboo paper is that it requires a long and complex process to process bamboo into paper. This is reflected in the price (source). Like trees, bamboo is a primary raw material. This means that, like the tree, bamboo is grown specifically for paper. This is in contrast to tomato paper, beet paper, and cocoa paper, where the fibers form a secondary raw material. These fibers remain after the food has been removed from the plant.

Paper from agricultural waste

When the farmer has harvested his wheat, barley, rye, rice, hemp, or sugar cane, agricultural waste remains on the field. Think of the non-edible leaves and stems. In developing countries, this waste is burned on the land and is thereby lost. But what if we were to use that agricultural waste to make paper? That is exactly what PaperWise has been doing since 2015. Cellulose is extracted from the stems and leaves that remain after the harvest, which is the primary ingredient of paper. The paper, which often consists of 100% agricultural waste, is of high quality and recyclable. Through this production method, few to no trees are felled to make paper (because the cellulose is extracted from agricultural waste instead of trees) and natural material that would otherwise be lost is given a second life.

THE MOST SUSTAINABLE CHOICE

It should be clear that paper is not sustainable by definition and that it pays to look at alternatives. The environmental impact of PaperWise paper is no less than 47% lower than paper from trees and 29% lower than recycled paper. In addition, PaperWise is completely CO2 neutral and is therefore a more sustainable solution than today’s paper from trees. By using agricultural waste as a raw material, the burning of agricultural waste is prevented, which stops harmful substances from entering the air. Waste that would otherwise have been lost is given a second life and, moreover, the farmer earns something extra. Both the food and the agricultural waste now provide financial value. At the same time, there is no compromise on quality, and paper from agricultural waste can, just like paper from trees, be recycled up to 7 times.
