SCOOP: CO2 NEUTRAL, TREE-FREE COPYING AND PRINTING PAPER FROM PLANT RESIDUES

PaperWise introduces unbleached CO2 neutral copy and print paper made from plant residues; stems and leaves left over from agriculture. This makes PaperWise copy paper 100% tree-free. The advantage of this paper innovation is the extremely low environmental impact and maximum contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations. Wondering how PaperWise printing paper contributes to this?

Why print paper made from plant residues from agriculture?

“It’s just copy paper,” you might think. And it is. Precisely because it is such a normal, frequently used product, you often don’t think about the impact you can make by choosing an environmentally friendly variant. Printing paper is mainly used to read information quickly and comfortably and, if required, to make notes. Everyone uses it, at home and/or at work, and that is precisely why copying and printing paper has such an impact on the environment. Most copier paper is made from trees with a growth time of between 15 and 80 years. So it takes many years for trees to grow before they are cut down, while the useful life of printing paper is relatively short. At PaperWise we show that this can be done differently. PaperWise Natural Copy & Printing A4 72 gram paper, made entirely from plant residues from agriculture, offers the solution for people and companies who are looking for the most environmentally friendly and sustainable copy and print paper.

The environmental impact of copying and printing paper

In Europe, we use 75 million tons of paper and cardboard every year. 55% of this is recycled and the remaining 45% is made from trees (Source: CEPI). Don’t be alarmed, but for this we cut down 265 million trees on an annual basis! The forestry area needed for this has an area larger than the United Kingdom. The global consumption of paper and cardboard is four times as much (Source: CEPI). Add to this the fact that the world population is still growing and with it the consumption of paper, then everyone understands that extra land use for forestry on behalf of the paper sector is not logical and not ecological.

Circular printing paper and copier paper

Why are plant residues (stems and leaves) left over after harvesting agricultural crops burned and not reused as a raw material for copy and printing paper? What can we improve about existing copy and print paper? Questions we have been asking ourselves. PaperWise has been fully focused on the circular economy since our launch in 2015. We want to contribute to as many SDGs as possible. Thus, the idea was born to develop a new generation of copy paper with the very lowest environmental impact and create a breeding ground for greater prosperity in developing countries.

Contributing to the SDGs with PaperWise copying and printing paper

PaperWise has deliberately chosen to use plant residues from agriculture for all PaperWise papers. This allows us to contribute to the 17 sustainability goals of the United Nations:

MULTIPLE VALUE FROM WASTE

Plant residues from agriculture create additional income for poor farmers. This increases their prosperity, food security increases, medical care and education become affordable. Financial inequality decreases and it lays a foundation for safe and sustainable communities.

EQUALITY, RESPECT AND PARTNERSHIPS FOR A SUSTAINABLE SOCIETY

The foundation for fair business practices and a peaceful equitable society begins with awareness. Respect and equality between men, women, companies and organizations is very important to us at PaperWise. Connecting with each other. Building together as partners on sustainable industrialization and infrastructure for all.

WISE WITH WASTE

The raw material for paper and board, cellulose fibers obtained from agricultural residues, can be recovered with less energy, chemicals and water than from trees. From the same piece of land and crop comes both food and the raw material for paper in the case of PaperWise. Safety and processes in which waste streams are used as raw materials keep ecological systems in balance.

PaperWise Natural copy paper delivers added value

By choosing PaperWise, you contribute to additional income for farmers in developing countries, but also contribute to clean air because agricultural waste no longer needs to be burned on the land. The unbleached PaperWise Natural paper has a light brown color and therefore has a sustainable appearance. Texts are very pleasant and calm to read. The PaperWise Natural 72 gram copy paper feels just as solid as bleached 80 gram white paper from trees, but is 10% lighter, another advantage to not bleaching paper. The packaging of the PaperWise Natural copy paper is made of the same material, thus fully implementing sustainability. New are also the very handy cut-out handles in the box, making lifting and carrying a lot easier.

All benefits at a glance:
